Cheerful Monday!

Pretty Flowers to brighten up a dreary Monday

The little flowers in this picture with blue centres were made by our instructor, I iced the cakes and made all the roses :)

Here in London the weather is soo miserable today, we are well into the autumnal season just without any of the lovely bits like crunchy leaves, autumnal colours, pumpkins....it's just grey, wet and almost dark at 3.30pm. Hopefully this short post will be a shot of colour to brighten up your rainy afternoons!

Last week I did a short class on how to make roses out of icing over at Fair Cake. It was a fantastic afternoon in a lovely, modern venue over in Greenwich. The class was fairly fast paced for a beginner sugarcrafter like me and you have to remember what you're taught as there aren't any hand outs at the end of the class. That said, the teaching was punchy and a great first lesson in how to make small and large roses both by hand and using rose cutters - I didn't leave as a rose making expert (as you can see!) but certainly left equipped with the confidence to practice what I'd learnt at home and build on my skills from there!

Fair Cake is a fab cake decorating & making school in Greenwich, London. The only bad point about the school is deciding which course to try out first! www.faircake.co.uk

Those cakes look wonderful. How nice to be able to make such beautiful flowers. It helps improving the mood with such greyness outside!

Hey Louise! Love the skills you've been taught! I think we need to keep making the flowers right into winter to cheer us up :-) do you find making roses really therapeutic? Xx

@ Magie & @ mylittleitaliankitchen - thank you so much! I am still very much a beginner rose maker but practise makes perfect! I just love colour, finding these dark October days so gloomy and I'm waiting for all the colours of Christmas to arrive! :-) xxx

@ Miss Cakeaholic - Hi Heather!! How are you? I found the big rose (the one I made with cutters) a bit stressful and you have to work so fast with the flowerpaste..when you're a first time flower making dufus it's a bit tricky!! The little ones we did by hand though and they were much better. I think I might make a bunch of them in the evenings when I dont have much to do and then just store them away as I think they keep for quite a few months - not that anyone eats them really anyway! xxx

Wow - they look amazing! I am a irregular baker, but really enjoy it when I do. In fact, you may have just inspired me to bake something this weekend. x

Hi Anna!! Thanks so much for your lovely comment :) I really am a beginner blogger and baker but I just love it! Definitely make something this weekend, try something minimum effort yet maximum deliciousness, like an all in one cake where you can just throw everything in a bowl together and mix it up! Mary Berry's Victoria Sponge or Lemon Drizzle are good fool proof ones. I think I might make some cake pops tonight for a friends birthday..always feels like an effort but so nice when others love it! Let me know if you do get around to it! Louise x

Hi Louise,

Greeting from Australia! I'm a sunshine person too and gloomy days can be depressing for me... However, we are getting a heat wave soon on Thur and wouldn't be nice at all with too much sunshine.

Nice to see these nicely crafted sugar flowers. I can see that they do brighten up your days. I'm now your latest follower and hope to see more of your bakes and cakes...

Your roses are absolutely stunning! What a gorgeous way to spend the day when it gets so horrid, dark and dreary outside. I lived in London for 4 years - it's not fun when it gets dark between 3-4pm in the afternoon:(
